When it comes to clutter, my parents were a case of opposites attract. My dad had a shorthand saying: "ABC." It meant "always be clearing." My mother, on the other hand, loved beautiful things and collected them without much rhyme, reason, or organization. I always followed my dad's footsteps more closely. We compared how participants fared while eating their habitual diets with how they responded to the two diets that were low in ultraprocessed foods. During the periods when participants ate fewer ultraprocessed foods, they naturally consumed fewer calories and lost weight, including total and abdominal body fat. Beyond weight loss, they also showed meaningful improvements in insulin sensitivity, healthier cholesterol levels, fewer signs of inflammation, and favorable changes in hormones that help regulate appetite and metabolism.

Loneliness and isolation among older Americans have mostly returned to pre-pandemic rates. That means more than one third of people age 50 to 80 years old, still feel lonely and isolated ( JAMA 2024). While research suggests that loneliness impacts physical and mental health, loneliness is a yearning for connection and belonging that people may be able to address in unexpected ways. One way is to draw upon the power of music.
They were the first generation of Americans to grow up with ultra-processed foods all around them - products typically loaded with extra fat, salt, sugar and flavorings. They were children and young adults at a time when such products, designed to maximize their appeal, proliferated. Now, a study shows, 21% of women and 10% of men in Generation X and the tail end of the Baby Boom generation, now in their 50s and early 60s, meet criteria for addiction to these ultra-processed foods.
The annual drowning report released by Royal Life Saving Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia on Tuesday recorded 357 deaths between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025 34 more than the previous year's total of 323, and a 27% increase on the 10-year average. One-third of those who drowned were over the age of 65, and drowning deaths among those aged 75 or older had increased by 63% on the 10-year average, the report shows.
